A garage RE-IMAGINED!

A decluttered garage opens up a world of possibilities beyond just storing your car. With a little creativity and planning, you can transform this space into a functional and enjoyable area that suits your needs and lifestyle.

My garage happens to be one of my FAVORITE spaces in my whole house. Seriously. I’ve mopped it. Not routinely, not even more than once/twice each year, but I’ve done it. The walls are covered in spray paint, acrylics, permanent marker, drawings, cartoons, squiggles, splashes, and words. Our garage has hosted ladies’ nights, kids’ sleepovers, and even a fancy holiday party! Our garage quickly transitions from an easy place to park our vehicles to a teen hang-out with a snack table, couches, LED lights, A/C, and a movie projector. None of this would be possible if my space wasn’t simplified and decluttered.

Maybe a gaggle of teens in sleeping bags isn’t the vision you have for your garage, but it works gloriously for us— sleepovers are so much more tolerable now! My house stays relatively clean and quiet; I don’t have to pretend to be patient (asking them to quiet down over and over and over again); and they don’t have to worry about a grumpy parent hassling them while they watch “10 Things I Hate About You” or a bazillion episodes of “Grey’s Anatomy.”

If we came over and cleared out your garage, how would you repurpose it? Not sure? Here are some options:

1. Workshop or Craft Space

A clean and organized garage can be the perfect setting for a workshop or craft area. Whether you're into woodworking, metalworking, painting, or crafting, a garage provides ample space to store tools and materials.

2. Home Gym

Transform your garage into a personal fitness studio. With the right equipment, such as weights, a treadmill, or a yoga mat, you can create a space that motivates and encourages regular exercise.

3. Entertainment or Game Room

If you're looking for a space to unwind and have fun, consider turning your garage into an entertainment or game room. Install a television, comfy seating, and perhaps a pool table, ping pong table, or dartboard. It's the perfect spot for family game nights or maybe just a place to hide from the family during game nights.

4. Home Office

A quiet, decluttered garage can become an ideal home office. Set up a desk, comfortable chair, and some shelves for files and office supplies. Ensure you have a strong internet connection and adequate lighting, so you can pretend to be productive while actually watching cat videos.

5. Art Studio

For the artistically inclined, a garage can serve as a creative haven. With natural light and plenty of room, it can be the perfect place to paint, sculpt, or draw.

6. Storage Solution

Even when decluttered, a garage can still serve as a valuable storage area. Use it to neatly store seasonal items, such as holiday decorations, camping gear, or sports equipment. Invest in shelving units and clear bins to keep everything organized and easily accessible.

7. Gardening Hub

If you love gardening, a garage can be transformed into a potting shed or gardening hub. Store your tools, pots, and soil in an organized manner. You could also create a small greenhouse section for starting seedlings or nurturing plants.

8. Music Studio

For musicians, a garage can become a practice or recording studio. Soundproof the space, set up your instruments, and add recording equipment. You can focus on your music without disturbing the rest of the house.

9. Guest Room

With some renovation and creativity, a garage can be converted into a cozy guest room. Insulate the space, add flooring, and furnish it with a bed, nightstand, and some decor to make it welcoming for visitors. If they complain about sleeping in the garage, just tell them it's a very exclusive Airbnb experience.

10. Kids' Playroom

A garage can be an excellent play area for children, offering them a space to explore and have fun. Set up a safe and inviting environment with toys, games, and craft supplies to keep your little ones entertained. It's also a great place to stash them when they're about to stage a mutiny over bedtime.
